Imprisoned minister Rev. Roger Christie married his long-time sweetheart and co-defendant Share E. St. Cyr at the Honolulu Federal Detention Center today, Friday, January 6, 2012.

In a phone message to HawaiiNewsDaily.com, Mrs. Christie said that the ceremony took just 20 minutes to complete.

“It’s done,” said Share Christie. “I didn’t keep the ‘St. Cyr’ after all,” she said. “I was writing it down and said, ‘I don’t think I want all this’. So it’s just ‘Share’ with no ‘E’ on it. Share Christie.”

“What an experience,” added Rev. Christie, in a corrlinks.com email message to HND. “The Minister did a fine job, and the FDC staff was courteous.”

“The unusual location disappeared momentarily as we held hands and gazed into each other’s eyes and shared our vows,” Christie wrote. “Share looked like an angel to me, her eyes were so clear and beautiful to look into as her voice delivered words of love and support that went straight into my heart. The ceremony took me to a place of unknown emotions… with great promise for the future. We got to breathe deeply together and have a few kisses, too. We tied the knot by hand-fasting with a hemp cloth prayer shawl. I’m a very happy man to have Share in my life. And so it is.”

Both Rev Christie and the new Mrs. Christie were arrested by Federal authorities on July 8, 2010. Share was released within a few days of the arrest to prepare for her trail on marijuana trafficking charges, along with 12 other defendants in the case. Mr. Christie — an avowed pacifist with no prior arrest record — has been held without bail at the Honolulu FDC for the past 18 months.

“It was so good to finally touch Roger,” said Mrs. Christie.

The Christie’s Federal court trial has been tentatively scheduled for February 28, 2012.

October 28, 2011

Florence T. Nakakuni, U.S. Attorney
PIKK Federal Bldg.
300 Ala Moana Blvd., Room 6100
Honolulu, HI 96850

Dear Florence,

I am writing you to express my very sincere feelings about the gross injustice which has led to Roger Christie’s lengthy incarceration because of a denial of bail and the possibility that even a plea bargain could lead to many years of future incarceration for him.
Some months ago I wrote the Island Voices piece which is pasted below after my signature. Our most dangerous “drugs,” causing very large numbers of deaths, are alcohol and tobacco. Marijuana doesn’t even come close. I have also pasted, below, a report published by ProCon.org, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to providing all the relevant and necessary information applicable to highly controversial public issues, such as those surrounding marijuana and prostitution. The report compares the number of deaths reportedly caused or contributed to by marijuana with a wide variety of popular and legal drugs designed to provide some of the same kinds of relief to patients they seek through marijuana use.

You should note that in a study from January 1, 1997 through June 30, 2005 there is no indication that cannabis, by itself, caused any deaths and that in conjunction with other drugs there were only a total of 279 deaths, compared with 11,687 deaths from FDA approved drugs designed to produce some of the same benefits as those claimed for marijuana. See page 4, below.

What these studies and comparisons seem to show, I believe very conclusively, is that the perceived dangers of marijuana have been grossly exaggerated, at least with regard to causing death, and that there is a huge failure of justice and fairness in imposing criminal penalties, including jail and all the other nasty consequences of criminal conviction – such as loss of scholarship aid for students or loss of employment – on those who provide or sell marijuana. Meanwhile, the government licenses and regulates the sales of other substances like liquor, tobacco, and FDA-approved drugs, such as morphine, which have been proved to cause large numbers of deaths.

I understand, of course, that there is a difference between law and justice and that, except for the constitutional requirement of equal protection, there is no explicit legal requirement that the law be fair. Fairness and justice, however, are very important values and, it seems to me, can only be achieved if those who run the criminal justice system undertake to exercise their lawful discretion in ways that enhance human dignity. While the adversary system may sometimes seem to encourage the seeking of the most extreme results, there is no law that says that lawyers cannot and should not exercise discretion to insure that legal results and consequences are not grossly unfair and excessive, whether too lenient or too punitive. In my view, there must always be an unspoken goal which favors human dignity and which encompasses fairness and justice.

I understand that Roger Christie, because he was disallowed bail, has already suffered 14 or so months in jail and may face up to five years in the hoosegow if he accepts a plea bargain. That outcome, in the larger scheme of things, seems to me to be grossly out of wack . . . unfair and unjust, that is, while purveyors of much more dangerous booze and tobacco can suffer no such penalties. It will turn out to be even worse – far worse – if, as well may be the case, Mr. Christie sincerely believes that his religion permits or requires marijuana use.

You should know that I am not a personal acquaintance of Mr. Christie. What I perceive is happening to him, however, seems to me to be so far out of line and unjust — especially since house arrest or other more limited constraints or modalities were available – that I write to you in the hope that you might be able to bring some justice and balance to this situation.
With warmest Aloha,

Most sincerely,
Dick

Aloha,
We have known Roger Christie for 2 decades. Over this time, he has made it his life’s mission to educate people on the many benefits of cannabis/ hemp and to change the harsh laws prohibiting their cultivation and use. Medical research on the benefits of cannabinoids and many states acceptance of medical marijuana support his views.

We have all read of local violent, brutal crimes where the perp with a long history of convictions is let off easy. In this case, it is just the opposite! Roger Christie is a gentle, good hearted man and has been held in Federal prison without bail for over a year and half, and both he and his fiance are facing long prison sentences.

It is vital to support Roger Christie so that true, moral justice can be achieved. Further incarceration of Roger Christies is unjust and a terrible waste of tax payers dwindling money. He should be released immediately, a year and half is enough!

Aloha,
The authorities on-going attention to eradicating marijuana across the country is appalling in a couple of ways. It has created an unnecessary criminal element and incarcerated thousands of otherwise harmless and decent citizens. Tragedy upon tragedy has been effected against a drug that so far has not proven to create hostility, erratic or dangerous behavior in any level close to that of legal alcohol consumption. Nor has it been normally associated with encouraging harder drug usage in cases other than when induced by government intervention. Many in the medical profession attest to the positive benefits yet the conflict and injustice remains.

So why is the Government relentlessly expending valuable resources against marijuana usage by prosecuting normally good citizens, terrorizing others and encouraging criminal activity when instead it could be benefiting from new taxes and free valuable services to fight greater threats to our society. Legalize marijuana and focus our attention to more important issues.

Aloha

I met Roger Christie first in the early mid 90′s when he first came to Maui and spoke proudly about the many uses of marijuana and applied his passion to helping people. He is such a caring and giving man. Whatever crime he may have been accused of, I, for one, feel he has served more than enough time and needs to be released. He can better serve humanity and his imminent bride from outside of his confined world. I believe marijuana should be decriminalized and the world here in Hawaii needs to become a leader in this very old issue. The resources we devote to “criminals” in marijuana-related crimes are staggering. Enough is Enough. Please FREE Roger. Enough, please. When so many people know the benefits of marijuana, isn’t it about time we finally decriminalize it and get people out of the jail environment and give them opportunity to become valuable free citizens.

Thank you for hearing this, Governor Abercrombie and State House and Senate… and hear this, law enforcers are prison authorities.

Aloha,

I have known Roger Christie for more than twenty years. I attended a men’s group with him for a while. He could be faulted for being somewhat obsessive and compulsive, especially concerning the issue of cannabis legalization. He could also be judged as being foolhardy enough to openly promote the use of cannabis from his cannabis ministry premises in downtown Hilo. He could even be criticized for making some profit from buying and selling cannabis, an illegal substance according to federal law. Non of the above judgements of this kind and gentle man can justify that he has been held without bail for 15 months in a federal prison on Oahu. Roger Christie provided people with a product that they were grateful to receive, as do all the other merchants in downtown Hilo. Roger’s situation is similar to the experience of many who dared to openly stand against foolish and unjust laws; Nelson Mandela against apartheid, Martin Luther King for civil rights, all the women who demanded the right to vote, and all the other brave and courageous people who insisted that something had to change. There are men who commit home invasion, brutally attack and injure the homeowner and receive 1 year in prison, probation, and community service. There are people who kill and maim while driving drunk on legal alcohol and spend no time in prison. Roger has not hurt or robbed anyone. He should be freed on bail immediately, so that he can await his trial in the company of those who love, accept, and appreciate this courageous and dedicated man.

Dear Editor;

I am writing this letter of support for my amazing friend, hero and humanitarian: Rev. Roger Christie.

He is powerful in prayer, spiritual healing, and peacekeeping and legendary in the modern marijuana movement. Though his imprisonment is heartbreaking, his courage is not only inspiring, but part of the motivation of the shift in consciousness that is happening regarding ending the war on drugs.

I have done many shows over the years with Rev. Christie and have found him to be a man of Love who is on a March For Peace.

I am outraged that our justice system would waste time and taxpayer dollars jailing a man of prayer over a plant.

Do the right thing. Support Rev. Roger Christie and demand he be set free!.

Sincerely,
the issue of justice regarding roger christy can be easily determined by one simple comparison…..marijuana vs alcohol….why is alcohol, one of the most dangerous and toxic substances to the human body legal????….alcohol causes countless problems and deaths in society each year….marijuana on the other hand, has not caused any deaths ever, is safer than aspirin… where is the justice here????

roger christy believes, as i do, that marijuana is a spiritual food or sacrament, that it is legal in the eyes of the great spirit for consenting adults, as a very useful plant and medicine to the body, mind, spirit of us humans…..roger should be honored for his commitment, to teach others about the positive uses of this plant, rather than used as an example to others, to show that those who promote marijuana will be punished….why continue the war on marijuana, that has failed since it’s beginning….roger is not a dangerous criminal, he is a caring member of society, trying to show that marijuana can be a spiritual medicine for the soul, the opposite of alcohol….please give roger a break….

Marijuana Prohibition

A criminal is one who infringes on the rights of humanity. In the case of marijuana prohibition it is the government who is infringing on the rights of humanity to use the most useful plant on the planet. Marijuana (aka. cannabis, hemp) has been used for food, clothing, shelter, energy, medicine and as a spiritual sacrament. Free Roger Christie as well as all prisoners incarcerated for the most useful plant on the planet.

Sincerely

Roger Christie is a compassionate nonviolent warrior made victim to the DEAs who are fueled by unethical privatized prison corporations.

Additionally, the truth frequently exposes corporations that fund “science” of modern medicine for fiction. Their sole purpose is to increase their powers with published quackery. Politicians can no longer hide behind these lies.

Roger’s plight is no different than the peaceful protesters of Wall Street. I pray this good man is appointed the sane and justified legal representation that he deserves.

Today the Hawaii International Drug trafficking Summit meets in Honolulu. With that in mind I would like to point out to the participants and remind the public that our friend, Rev. Roger Christie remains in custody in federal prison without bail or trial since July 8, 2010 for growing, processing and distributing marijuana. U.S. District Judge Alan Kay ruled that Roger is “a danger to society”.

This is a travesty of justice happening right here in Hawaii by the federal authorities of our own governments. One that prides its human rights record and goes around the world pointing fingers at abuses in other countries. To those who know him, Roger Cristie is a peaceful man. We believe that marijuana prohibition is unjust and infringes on our inherent right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

To those at the Drug trafficking Summit please vote to decriminalize marijuana and focus your attention on more dangerous drugs. Marijuana does not deserve it’s “schedule 1” status. Hawaii’s Democratic Party has passed resolutions which call for legalizing marijuana for personal use by people over 21 and when given the opportunity Hawaii’s voters overwhelmingly supports decriminalization.

Who are these public servants really serving? We, the people, ask that federal authorities, whose salaries we pay, “Free Roger Christie and legalize the use of marijuana for adults”.

Enough

Medical marijuana: 45 researchers concluded that established uses include easing of nausea and vomiting, anorexia, and weight loss; “well-confirmed effect” was found in the treatment of neurogenic pain, movement disorders, asthma, glaucoma. (wikipedia – condensed)

Clinical trials have shown the efficacy of cannabis as a treatment for cancer and AIDS patients, suffering from clinical depression, nausea and resulting weight loss due to aggressive treatments. A synthetic version of THC – dronabinol has been shown to relieve symptoms of anorexia and reduce agitation in elderly Alzheimer’s patients. Dronabinol has been approved for use with anorexia in patients with HIV/AIDS and chemotherapy-related nausea. This drug is more expensive and less available than whole cannabis and has not been shown to be effective or safe. (wikipedia – condensed)
So why will the FDA approve a drug that is possibly toxic and not the organic source?

Making the use of a medically beneficial substance illegal and punishing the person promoting these benefits through its use is the actual crime.

Roger Christie: Stop the insanity set him free.

Is it not ironic that the Bankers and corporate CEO’s who have committed outrageous crimes against our country and against our community’s have had no charges brought against them and enjoy life as they are accustomed to (Can you say life of luxury) while Roger Christie has been in jail for over a year for following his beliefs and helping people, and being a good and outstanding member of his community.

I come from New Mexico Where even our previous Republican Governor, Gary Johnson saw the wisdom in legalizing marijuana hemp, which you can not even get high on is illegal in this country which is ignorant beyond belief can be used
as a super food, super fiber, for cloths rope, insulation, paper products etc, etc.So we have to import it from country’s like China, who uses it for everything and makes huge profits on it.One could say that our country’s political belief that all things marijuana are bad, is one of the biggest and costly misperceptions in our history is just a small list of the ramifications of this belief.

1. The drug war: legalizing marajuana would do miracles almost immediately.
2. People going to the really dangerous drugs like crack and meth and the devastation caused by such drugs.
3. Missing out on all the wonderful and healing properties of this herb from God.
4. Turn disaster into community profit, and save Mexico at the same time.Juarez MX. is the most violent city in the world, only miles from the USA.Take the power from the Cartels Legalize pot.
Maybe the movie “Reefer Madness” started this whole mess It was not reality folks just an entertaining joke.

Treating Roger Christie like public enemy #1 is just another example of how political policy uses its power to To make Mr Christie the scapegoat while the truly dangerous are free to weave there little webs of big profit and community destruction. Set the visionary free, put the Bankster in jail.

Sincerely

When Private Corporations profit from harsh and illogical drug laws, good men like Reverend Roger Christie are kept in jail in order to generate profits for shareholders. Why hasn’t Roger Christie been allowed a trial in the 15 months since his arrest? Why is he being presented as a danger to the community?
These are questions anyone should be concerned with because it appears that anyone can be made a scapegoat in this long and unjust drug war. Roger ran a ministry in downtown Hilo for many years and did much work to address the ice epidemic on the island. Roger Christie isn’t forgotten. There are many of us who would like to see him released.

“Equal treatment under the law” applies basically to people. But it’s also a good idea for things like facts and realities. Sixteen states including this one think medicinal marijuana is credible enough to try letting patients use it. But the federal authorities refuse to even consider changing their classification of pot as being worse than “ice”. Instead they’re spending our tax- and deficit- dollars sending SWAT teams after grandmothers with too many plants in their garden.

They let Bernard Madoff out on bail, but they won’t do the same for Roger Christie? The only thing “equal” about that is the level of lunacy.

Aloha,

Thank you for your time.

Rev. Roger Christie has been held without trial for 15 months,
denied bail 5 times on charges of distributing Cannabis, a plant the US gov. holds the patent on….

“Patent number 6,630,507 states unequivocally that cannabinoids are useful in the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of diseases including auto-immune disorders, stroke, trauma, Parkinson’s, Alzeheimer’s and HIV dementia. The patent, awarded in 2003, is based on research done by the National Institute of Health, and is assigned to the US Dept. of Health and Human Services.” (Brinna Nanda)

Roger maintains that all humans have a spiritual right to the Cannabis plant.

The US Federal government holds legally that is treats Alzeheimer’s, and the citizens do not have any right to it.
What is your personal opinion?

Please raise your voices, contact Senators Inoue and Akaka, and your Congress-persons.

The War on Drugs should be ended. It has filled our jails, cost taxpayers millions, and fueled organized crime. In June of 2011, an alliance of world leaders declared the War on Drugs “a resounding failure”! The alliance included former Secretary of State George Shultz, former Chairman of the Federal Reserve Paul Volcker, former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, and ex-presidents of Columbia and Mexico. Their recommendations to the UN:

End the criminalization of drug users who “do no harm to others;”

Use legal regulation to wrestle controls from criminals;

Institute addiction treatment programs if needed.

Jimmy Carter supported these reforms in a New York Times editorial, “Call Off the Global Drug War.”

Hawaii County voters passed an initiative declaring that marijuana have lowest enforcement priority. Cannabis Minister Roger Christie, a longtime hemp activist in the Hilo community, is now facing marijuana distribution charges. He has been jailed for over a year and not permitted bail, yet we witness bail offers to those accused of horrendous murders. Our community is disheartened with this injustice. Cannabis has tradition of health & spiritual benefits.

Stop the criminalization insanity.

Dear Friends and Ohana,

This coming weekend has a very important summit on Oahu called the Hawaii International Drug Trafficking Summit, it’s actually for the police nations to get together and talk about how they can take more liberty away from the good people of Hawai’I and others in my opinion.

There’s going to be a lot of attention in the newspapers talking about drug policies: more of the same. Zero talk about the 40-year failed drug war(s). At the same time, it’s coming very close that our attorneys are wanting Roger and I to plea bargain this next week. We still are anticipating our miracle that will secure a better than imagined outcome. Let this summit signal the end of the war on drugs and the beginning of a dialog and a sane global policy.

One of the most profound things that you could do for us, Roger would say, “Please write an editorial or letter to the editor on my behalf.” Please, even if you zero consider yourself a writer, write a letter anyway, from the heart.

At the same time, we’re getting married this next week over at the prison, Once I am his wife, I will have the privilege of visiting Roger, my beloved, for the first time in the 15 months, I have yet to be able to speak to him in private or simply touch his hand during his wrongful incarceration. Please consider your editorial as a wedding gift for us to be part of the miracle.

Mahalo nui loa.

I have a vision of having 70 people write to the Star Bulletin newspaper on Oahu in the next three days to ask that Roger be set free, with his good name restored.

Will you be one of those 70 angels for Roger and me? If so, please email me as soon as possible so I can add your name to the list of writers.

Editorials have to be 175 words or less. You can send them to:

letters@staradvertiser.com

PS I’m attaching a few letters as samples, as Roger wants good manners on his behalf. I am the firey one. Be bold my friends!

Mahalo so very much, many blessings!

Sample Editorials:

Cannabis prohibition is a direct measure of the incompetence of our state and federal governments. Every human being, and in fact all vertebrates, make marijuana-like compounds known as endocannabinoids. They literally regulate all body systems including the, cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune, excretory, nervous, musculoskeletal systems. They regulate our appetite. Every person on the planet gives themselves the munchies every time they get hungry by activating portions of the endocannabinoid system. Taking a warm bath soothes as our aches and pains while it relaxes us because endocannabinoids levels are increased as the try to down regulate the extra heat.

In reality, increasing cannabis activity, by using the only plant that can directly tap into the endocannabinoid system, has antiaging, and anticancer properties. Psychoactive endocannabinoids are even found in mother’s milk. Perhaps law enforcement should be arresting nursing mothers, or maybe all women for walking around with paraphernalia.

Roger Christie knows of the benefits that cannabis has to offer mankind. His religion demands he use it and help others to use it. America was founded on religious freedom not as a police state. Free Roger Christie to help free us all..

BEGIN A SANE POLICY ON CANNABIS – LIBERATE ROGER CHRISTIE

Reverend Roger Christie and thirteen others were arrested in July 2010 in connection with the cannabis ministry in Hilo. The State of Hawaii licensed Roger to marry people as a cannabis church minister. Roger advocated a sane approach to the use of cannabis. Time after time, Roger requested that elected officials pay attention to the National Institute of Drug Abuse study, which concluded the methamphetamine (known as “ice”) problem in Hawaii was caused by the drive to eradicate cannabis. Now, Roger is held without bail in federal prison, awaiting a trial where federal prosecutors want him sentenced to 5 to 40 years. This week, we have the Hawaii International Drug Trafficking Summit at the Hyatt in Waikiki. Please write to your newspaper editors and your elected officials asking that our government move towards a more sane policy on cannabis, save your tax dollars, and free Roger Christie.

______________________________________________

CORPORATIONS PROFIT WHEN YOU GO TO PRISON

A disturbing trend is emerging. Private corporations have begun to run our prisons. The largest of these is the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA). According to its 2010 annual 10K SEC filing, CCA operates 66 correctional facilities with 90,000 beds. Like all corporations, CCA wants to continue to grow and turn a bigger profit. Its annual report states one of the risks to making more profits is that “any changes with respect to drugs . . . could affect the number of persons arrested, convicted, and sentenced, thereby potentially reducing demand for correctional facilities to house them.” Apparently, we have to continue the drug wars, because CCA and corporations like them have to continue to fill their beds. Does this send a chill up your back? If so, please contact Congresswomen Mazie Hirono (https://hironoforms.house.gov/ContactMe/Email.htm) or Colleen Hanabusa (https://hanabusa.house.gov/contact-me/email-me) asking them to end the drug wars and deny funding for privatized prisons.

Welcome to my poetry
it gets inside my brain
I want to show some more of me
and hope something you’ll gain.

This is one way to frame my thoughts
I’m sharing what is true
it’s free to have a look around
I trust it’s fun for you.

Some say that pot’s the devil’s weed
I’ll bet that God’s offended
we know that it’s a basic need
and He’s to be commended!

The ‘burning bush’ was very clear
for Moses in his sandals
but Rabbis, Popes and Preachers now
treat holy herb like vandals.

Almost a year locked in this place
outside the sky is blue
I wonder how to win this case
and what would Jesus do?

He’s not around to speak his mind
we’ll have to make a guess
if we just followed his best words
we’d soon clean-up this mess.

The First Amendment’s our defense
I thought that it would fly
the only way the feds can win
is keeping-up the lie.

They say it has no medicine
that they can really see
but sixteen states have legalized
it’s clear to you and me.

Big pharma wants the only piece
of hemp’s BIG luscious pie
they say the plant is of no use
so cut it down and die.

Behind the scenes they’re working hard
like busy bees make honey
we all know what they will find’s
worth ton$ and ton$ of money!

Who has to ‘get it’ for a change
to happen on this Earth?
billions of hungry people
are anxious for the birth.

Yet every night I hear the news
the dollar keeps on falling
politicians everywhere
are really good at stalling.

Pretending they can’t see this herb
martini firm in hand
while bankrupsies and foreclosures
sweep across the land.

Remember in the ’80′s
before the crackdown came?
cash-flow was really flowin’
this state was in the game.

Crime was so much lower
smiles were everywhere
even all the welfare Moms
hardly had a care.

But “Operation Wipeout”
lived up to its name
it wiped-out the pakaloha
we can prove it was to blame.

Eradication of the herb
caused meth to take its root
but vested interests like the cops
say that the point is moot.

The only study ever done
to ask what caused meth’s troubles
was soon suppressed, I wonder why
and then the troubles doubled!

Making war against our people
the Constitution calls it ‘treason’
the drug war is exactly that
it runs on all false reason.

Politicians have it made
in no reporter’s spotlight
they both feed on the charade
even tho’ it’s not right.

All pot people in this world
know hemp is sacrament
and together we all wonder
where our freedoms went.

More important is to know
just how we get ‘em back
because the herb we want to grow
to get ourselves on track.

Green, green ‘gold’ is better than
the kind inside the ground
can harvest every 90 days
a ‘goldmine’ you have found!

Imagine all the wealth to be
around the world this year
if only we could stand our ground
the hemp would reappear!

It’s a natural commodity
history makes it clear
hemp fueled the Revolution
we need a peaceful one this year!

Yes, this strange and windy road
is what I kinda hoped for
but I have been super-surprised
it’s given me so much more.

I followed spirit and my heart
to bring me what is new
adventure, romance, politics
all on the ‘isle of view’.

Life’s not at all just what I think
it’s what I feel and find
I know that I have had it great
it really was ‘da kine’.

Now I sit and wonder why
this detour is my path
as I look o-ver my life
I must re-do the math.

I am convinced that I have found
a way to conquer hate
I like to say for any bummer
Oh my, “God, that’s GREAT!”

It makes me smile and feel I can
avoid the beaten road
to find my way upon this Earth
and lighten-up my load.

Now I have a newer way
to redeem all of my faults
it proves that gold is really more
than just what’s in the vaults.

I confess to all that’s bad
forgiveness is the grace
when gratitude and love is had
we then can win our race.

No one did I cheat or steal
or shoot or lie or rob
I am convinced now even more
it was an ‘inside job’.

Yes, ‘they’ say I broke the law
that got me on this ride
but living like I had it made
my fall was caused by ‘pride’.

I organized the ministry
it really was superb
we helped much more than you could see
with T L C and herb.

I did my best to follow bliss
smoked pot and smiled a lot
but I was loose and having fun
and this is what I got.

Now I sit here in this pen
just thinking what to do
and at this point this is the time
I get to think of you.

Like all the movies I have seen
with heroes round the world
I simply want right now to save
the world and get the girl.

I’ve gotta stop with all the words
they’re flowing out my brain
I’m typing fast as I can think
it’s coming down like rain.

Holy moly, stop me now!
I’m sure you’ve gotta go
there’s other things we’ve both to do
let’s get-on with the show.

I tried to STOP, it’s hard to do
our minds need time to mend
come-on now put on the brakes
this poem has got to end!

It wasn’t then, although I tried
to hit the key and SEND it
I’m sittin’ here and ready now
it’s really time to end it.

First roll a joint and pass it on
like hippies did before
we all can learn a lot from them
“make love and don’t make war”!

After all these lines of rhyme
and all the things I see
the most important of them all
the future’s up to … me.

Much love and respect to everyone,

by Jeane Ohta

June 17 will mark forty years since President Richard Nixon, citing drug abuse as “public enemy No. 1”, officially declared a “war on drugs.” A trillion dollars and millions of ruined lives later, the war on drugs remains an abject failure.

Drug policy reform advocates all across the country will mark this auspicious date with a day of action to raise awareness about the failure of drug prohibition and call for an exit strategy to the failed war on drugs. Let’s make Hawaii’s event one of the biggest.

We’re asking everyone who harbors reservations about the war on drugs — to join us at the rally. (Click here to download a PDF flyer for the event.)

Hawaii has been a willing partner in the drug war. Our jails and prisons, filled with nonviolent drug lawbreakers, are testament to that sad fact. Which has done more harm – drugs or the drug war, which has tattered the social fabric of Hawai`i and helped decimate the safety net for our most vulnerable community members?

We really want to have a BIG turnout for the rally and sign waving. Isn’t it worth 2 hours of your time to question the government about the HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS going to fund the LARGEST UNEVALUATED government program ever?

We will have extra signs, but we encourage everyone to bring signs.

STOP THE DRUG WAR RALLY & SIGNWAVING
FRIDAY, JUNE 17, 2011
Hawaii State CAPITOL ROTUNDA
4 p.m. – 6 p.m.

Aloha to you Mike, and to your readers. Thanks for all your kindness and support. It matters ~ and we feel it.

I’m doing pretty well considering the situation. I’m really UP spiritually, emotionally, mentally; physically OK. There’s purpose, meaning and love in my life, that’s why. In many ways I feel blessed, and I’m still an activist at heart. We’re living our faith and practicing our spirituality … religiously. We feel this whole experience is part of our personal growth; it’s for an even HIGHer purpose than we previously realized we needed, or wanted. God, that’s great.

Please know that the federal legal system is TOTALLY different from State laws and courts, etc. We had zero idea of how it really worked until this new chapter of our legal education. For instance, I’m told that if I testify in my own defense at a trial that I will be charged with an additional ‘crime’ of “obstructing justice” and have extra years added to any potential sentence. How do you like them apples? It’s a pretty sobering ride, to be sure. Ever hear of that?

Consider that the feds zero admit to this day that there even is such a thing as non-pharmaceutical “medical marijuana” and you begin to get the idea. How can that be? They have the Judge Young decision, the studies of reducing tumors and preventing cancers, etc., etc. and they still deny all of it and let millions of people suffer and die, and others go to prison unnecessarily, lose their children, homes, etc. … routinely. Just another day at the office. Virtually all news media and most citizens allow this to happen, and the Congress members who created this system easily get re-elected again and again.

Now we hear that the feds are starting to license pharmaceutical companies o-n-l-y to grow Cannabis for medicine. “There’s NO medical marijuana except OUR medical marijuana.” You begin to get the idea of how different this ‘government’ is from what we thought it would be as we pledged allegiance to the flag back in grade school … ‘with liberty and justice for all’.

This is a big week for us as ‘plea bargain’ talk is in the air and is on the table for consideration. It’s obviously a big deal for each of us faced with a life-altering decision to make, either way we choose to go. Share and I appreciate all of your comments, ideas and suggestions; whether supportive, critical or whatever, and we will read all that are posted in the coming days.

Please know that we’ve been getting positive, measurable results from our spiritual practice (www.zerolimits.info), and we look forward to a successful outcome. Visualize victory!

  Love and respect to everyone,

                  Roger

Overcoming decades of disunity and ineffectual action programs, thousands of demonstrators from the Hawaii marijuana community converged on the Honolulu International Airport on Saturday calling for the release of one their spiritual leaders held nearby. For nearly a year, Reverend Roger Christie has been held without bail at the federal jail towering adjacent to the Hawaiian Airline gates.

Chanting, “ CANNABIS IS SAFER THAN YOUR GOVERNMENT!” or, “U.S. OUT OF MY MOUTH!”

strolling demonstrators –airport security estimated in excess of 5,000–filed thru public and unchecked corridors of the sprawling airport.

Rev. Roger Christie has been held in federal detention in Honolulu for nearly one year without bail.

Hawaii state airport security and dozens of Honolulu Police Department officers stood in clumps near doors and entrances at loading zones eyeing sign holding and chanting demonstrators pacing by.

No arrests were made; though, the distinct odor of burning cannabis could be noticed everywhere as individuals or small groups cloistered briefly in the parking structure or stairwells passing marijuana joints. The exhaled scent was impossible to ignore for arriving tourist. One visitor, arriving on Untied Airlines from outside Schenectady, noticed the smell right away. According to visitor Sal Berner, “If people could come to Hawaii to smell that, Las Vegas would be underwater already! Look at it this way: Marijuana is nice while gambling is a vice.”

Also sniffing were increasing numbers of Honolulu policemen arriving in riot gear.

—The pro-marijuana-Free Roger Christie demonstrators, identifying themselves as Freedom Marchers, also fielded an all pervasive and effective public address system. So besides the distinct transformational aroma permeating the locked-down post 911 Airport of Aloha, media savvy demonstrators broadcasted speeches and even live music, performed amidst the throngs of irregular marching demonstrators via selected cell phones.

Their broadcast -emitted from hundreds of radios from cars pre-parked or roving- also came from the hundreds of cellphones with speakers on and held aloft by the Freedom Marchers. Since the statements and music came from every direction, as long as selected speech makers or entertainers minimalized emotional gesticulating, they were unidentifiable and unremarkable to the crowd-surveying authorities. Airport and police authorities were unable, even once, to interrupt the ‘virtual soapbox’ with its constant provocative promotion of the famous plant and the denouncing of the war against it.

One speaker, only identifying himself as the Tiger! Repose in Paradise Park (TRIPP!), spoke the longest of any other the luminary speakers including, one former Hawaii State Senator, a former governor and other now confessing Hawaii and international social icons.

Here is the text of his speech sent exclusively to Lightonhawaii.com.

THE GET THIS, BRAH, ADDRESS

Four scores and and seven seasons ago,

Painting by Barry Wilkinsen

Our Mother brought to this Aina a new strain, conceived in Puna and dedicated to the proposition that all plants are NOT created equal.

We are now engaged in a corrupt civil war, testing whether that plant or any medicinal Plant from seed grown organically, may long endure.

We are now oppressed by a great criminal war. We have met, outside one of its shitty prisons. We have come to celebrate the sacrifices of one of our teachers, and inspire more to start growing so that others can live. It is only humane and civilized that we do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave people, imprisoned or dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what

................Painting by Barry Wilkinsen

they did here. It is for us the still free, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work of propagating what they who fought here have thus far so nobly germinated. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored incarcerated we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these shall not have suffered hardship in vain—that this Hawaii Nation, under Wisdom and All Divine, shall have a new birth of freedom—and The PLANT of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from Planet Hurt.”

Attempts to reach TRIPP! by news staff at LightonHawaii were only answered with this cryptic recorded message:

“IN POLITICAL/SPIRITUAL BATTLES, THE PURPOSE OF A MARTYR IS TO MAKE THE PEOPLE SMARTER.

THAT IS ALL THE CHANGE YOU GET.”

By noon, the throngs of demonstrators that had arrived just after ten, had mostly departed. Police and airport security noticed just a few dozen people of various age groups with identical green t-shirts and white plastic bags picking up litter, some of it left by the demonstrators. But officials were soon in for a shock.

After the green clad litter picking people had all but left, HPD officer Joseph Make’enekine spotted one of their white plastic bag tucked below an airport coconut tree.

“This has been a crazy day!” said the 22 year Honolulu police veteran. “At first, they caught us by surprise. There were thousands marching along the mall here before we knew it, and there was marijuana smoke and speeches and music
coming from everywhere. We called for back-up and even the SWAT came though they remained hidden for the tourists’ sake. Then we realized that though there was marijuana smoke everywhere, the crowd was going to be peaceful as we all know tokers and smokers to be.”

As the demonstrators and smoke disappeared, police started to breathe a sigh of relief. The green shirted, white bagged clean-up crew, the police thought was a friendly gesture from the mostly Hawaii Medical Marijuana crowd. That, until the rude discovery by Officer Make’enekine.

The bag had hundreds of marijuana seeds.

“I didn’t think anything when I first saw the bag. I mean, I didn’t think it was a bomb or anything terrorist, so I went to pick

.........Light On! By Barry Wilkinsen

it up. I was shocked when I saw the seeds. I knew right away what it was because I, –ahhh, grew-up on the Big Island and —ahhh, I —ahhh.. Now we believe the demonstrators were tossing marijuana seeds, maybe shipped from Canada, heck even from the —ahh, Big Island, all around the Honolulu International Airport. In fact we have identfied some seeds in two planters just down from here. And a criminal investigation has been initiated. We believe there is more, and we are going to have to review all the airport security cameras to see what we can come up with. Honolulu Vice, the DEA, FBI, Homeland Security, Department of Agriculture and even the FAA are all now looking into it. We thought maybe even HAZMAT might help clean-up.”

“The big worry,” says Make’enekine, “are the sprinklers. They are all on a computer schedule and when the seeds get wet they’ll start germinating. In, –ahhhh, a couple of days, can you imagine what it’s going to look like here at the airport…for the arriving tourists? We might have to destroy all the plants around the airport to spare the kids of tourists from getting the wrong message while in Hawaii. But this place could end-up looking worse than Fukushima!”
